What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle yet powerful form of energy healing that helps the body return to balance and supports well-being in body, mind, and spirit. The energy flows where it is needed most, helping to release tension, restore the natural energy flow, and create a sense of peace and stillness deep within.
Reiki is especially effective when the body’s energy centres are out of balance — what we often refer to as “stagnant energy” or “stored tension.”
After a session, many people feel calm, warm, and lighter inside — as if the body has been able to breathe again and let go of what it has been carrying.
The origin of Usui Reiki
Reiki was developed by Mikao Usui (1865–1926), a Japanese doctor and spiritual teacher.
He dedicated his life to searching for a method of healing and spiritual awakening, and developed Reiki after a 21-day meditation and fasting retreat on Mount Kurama in Japan. There he experienced light and energy which he named Reiki — “universal life energy” — and went on to teach others how to channel this energy through the hands.
Usui Reiki has since spread throughout the world and is now one of the most widely practiced forms of energy healing in the West.
What happens in a Reiki session?
A Reiki session lasts about 75 minutes and takes place in a warm, peaceful space. You lie down on a treatment bed with a blanket, an eye pillow, and a heated pad underneath you if you wish.
We begin with a 10–15 minute guided relaxation to calm the mind and help you settle into deeper rest.
Once you are relaxed, I begin the Reiki treatment by placing my hands on or just above the body’s energy centres and on the feet. This supports the natural energy flow and allows the body’s own healing process to activate.
The session ends with a few minutes of sound healing, using the soft tones of Koshi chimes to deepen relaxation and gently seal the energy.
Energy centres addressed in the session
-
Root (Muladhara) – grounding, stability, safety
-
Sacral (Svadhisthana) – creativity, joy, connection to the body
-
Solar Plexus (Manipura) – confidence, personal power, identity
-
Heart (Anahata) – love, forgiveness, compassion
-
Throat (Vishuddha) – communication, expression, truth
-
Third Eye (Ajna) – intuition, vision, inner wisdom
-
Crown (Sahasrara) – connection to light, faith, higher consciousness
After the session
After a Reiki session, you may feel deeply grounded and relaxed, or you may experience mild “energy-clearing” sensations such as tiredness, warmth, tingling, or emotional release. Some people dream more, laugh or cry, while others feel very calm and centred. All of this is normal — it simply means the body is processing what has been released.
If the energy begins to shift strongly after the treatment, it can be helpful to return within 7–10 days to continue the work and stabilize the balance.
